Too Much Too Young: The Story of 2 Tone Records by Daniel Rachel
Inspired by the Rock Against Racism movement, Jerry Dammers set out with a goal: to unite black and white, male and female, in punky ska music that would serve as a joyous riposte to the privations of Britain in the late 1970s. This social history covers the huge impact of Dammers’ the Specials and the bands on his 2 Tone label, Madness, the Beat and the Bodysnatchers among them. It all fell apart as the movement became, ironically, a favourite of far-right skinheads, but as Daniel Rachel illuminates, it was fun while it lasted. WH
