SUMMARY:THIS AIN'T ROCK 'N' ROLL: Publication date
DESCRIPTION:THIS AIN’T ROCK ‘N’ ROLL\n\nPop Music\, the Swastika & the Third Reich \n \nBy Daniel Rachel \nPublished in hardback (£25)\, eBook and audio\, 6th November 2025 \nA shocking and absorbing account of pop music’s complicated history with fascism and the imagery surrounding it from award-winning author Daniel Rachel. Introduction by Billy Bragg. \nIn this meticulously researched and sensitively told history\, with an Introduction by Billy Bragg\, Daniel Rachel examines pop music’s enduring and problematic fascination with the swastika – and Nazism itself. \nOver the last seven decades\, some of rock ’n’ roll’s most celebrated figureheads have flirted with the imagery and theatre of the Third Reich. From Keith Moon and Vivian Stanshall kitting themselves out in Nazi uniforms and terrorising Jewish neighbourhoods to Siouxsie Sioux and Sid Vicious brandishing swastikas in the pomp of punk\, generations of performers have associated themselves in troubling ways with the aesthetics\, mass hysteria and even ideology of Nazism. Whether shock factor\, stupidity\, or crass attempt at subversion\, rock ‘n’ roll has indulged these associations – whimsically\, carelessly\, occasionally malevolently – in a way not accepted by any other artform. But how accountable should fans\, the media\, and the music industry be for what has often seemed a sleazy fascination with the eroticised perversions of a fascist regime? \nIn This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll\, award-winning music historian Daniel Rachel navigates these turbulent waters with extraordinary delicacy and care\, asking us to look anew at the artists that have defined us\, inspired us and given us joy – and consider why so many have been drawn to the imagery of a movement responsible for the twentieth century’s worst atrocities. Alongside a sensitive history of the Holocaust and an examination of the place it holds in our cultural consciousness\, Rachel asks essential questions of actions often overlooked or underplayed\, whilst neither casting sweeping judgement nor offering easy answers. In doing so\, he asks us to reassess the history of rock ’n’ roll and sheds new light on the grim echoes of the Third Reich in popular culture and the legacy of twentieth (and twenty-first)-century history as it defines us today. \nDaniel Rachel said: ‘This has been a tremendously difficult book to write. But I believe necessary. As a teenage music fan\, I struggled to reconcile rock ’n’ roll’s rebellious attitude with my understanding of the horrors committed by the Third Reich. The swastika links both as an emblem of Nazi oppression but also a leitmotif for rock ’n’ roll defiance. Today\, the global rise of fascism challenges the defeat of Nazi Germany and the Axis powers in the Second World War. If rock ’n’ roll is to remain at the vanguard of the revolutionary spirit it needs to confront its shortcomings\, stand against persecution\, and address its historical failings.’ \n\n\n\n\nWhite Rabbit Books 30 October 2025\n\n\nOrder Now https://geni.us/ThisAintRockNRoll\n\n\n  \n\n#danielrachel #ThisAintRockNRoll\n\n

SUMMARY:'American Pop' Film screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:GARDEN CINEMA EVENT\nJargon presents: American Pop + Q&A 15\nRalph Bakshi\, USA\, 1981\, 95m.\n\n\nDue to unexpected circumstances\, Paul Gorman is no longer able to take part in this screening. We are instead very glad to be joined for a Q&A with the award-winning music writer Daniel Rachel\, author of the forthcoming book This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll: Pop Music\, the Swastika and the Third Reich. \nLong neglected\, American Pop is perhaps the last great film of the golden age of adult animation. At once a jukebox musical\, an intergenerational epic\, and a stylistic tour de force\, the film tells the intertwined story of music and migration through the adventures of one remarkable family. Fleeing the Russian pogroms\, a rabbi’s wife and her baby son land in New York at the height of the vaudeville craze. Each generation that follows falls in with another wave of distinctly American music\, from jazz and soul to rock’n’roll\, psychedelia\, punk\, and beyond. Directed by Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat) in his distinctive Rotoscoping style\, the film is both a reimagining of the director’s own journey from Mandatory Palestine to Brooklyn and a celebration of the allure of mass culture. \nScenes of animated violence and drug use \nThis screening is part of ‘Beyond Jewish Cinema’\, a new series that considers what it really means to make ‘Jewish cinema’ in light of parallel currents in commercial and experimental filmmaking. Moving from the Lower East Side to the Yiddish East End and beyond\, the series shines a new light on old favourites alongside lesser-known works from across the history of film. ‘Beyond Jewish Cinema’ is programmed by Jargon\, a non-profit dedicated to exploring past\, present\, and future visions of Jewish diasporic culture. \n\nBook Tickets\n\n\n\nWed 25 Jun\n20:30 \n\n\n\n\n\n \nPlease arrive promptly – we do not show adverts.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n39-41 Parker Street London WC2B 5PQ

SUMMARY:Bob Dylan Centre
DESCRIPTION:Bob Dylan Center Book Club: “Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMay 22\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins on Thursday\, May 22\, for a virtual Book Club event with Daniel Rachel\, author of a new book exploring the definitive and remarkable story of 2 Tone Records. \nIn 1979\, 2 Tone Records exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain\, the United States and beyond as albums by the Specials\, the Selecter\, Madness\, the English Beat and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white\, a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic\, white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. \nThe idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, England\, masterminded by middle-class art student Jerry Dammers\, who envisioned an English Motown. Dammers signed a slew of successful artists\, and a number of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto “Top of the Pops” and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Over the following years\, Dammers built the label back up again\, entering a new phase full of fresh signings and a beautiful end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” \n“Too Much Too Young” is the definitive story of a label that\, for a brief\, bright\, burning moment\, shaped British\, American and world culture. \n\nDaniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: “Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters;” “Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\,” “2 Tone\,” and “Red Wedge;” “Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia;” “The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?;” “One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene;” and “Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever.” He is also coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography\, “I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in the Beat.” In 2021\, Rachel was a guest curator of the “2 Tone Lives & Legacies” exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021\, and he curated the anniversary edition of the Selecter’s debut album\, “Too Much Pressure.” \nDetails:\nThis event will take place virtually via Zoom. \nThursday\, May 22\, 2025 \n6 p.m. \nTickets:\n$5 for nonmembers \nFree for Bob Dylan Center members

SUMMARY:Curzon Cleevedon 2 Tone Britain
DESCRIPTION:Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story + LIVE BAND + DOCUMENATRY + IN-CONVERSATION\n\n \n\nBook Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of 2-Tone deep diving as Daniel Rachel\, author of Too Much\, Too Young: The 2 Tone Story\, discusses his book and the wider questions of music\, culture\, and anti-racism in conversation with Bristol Poet and educator at Cargo\, Lawrence Hoo\, and Publisher\, Sociologist\, and Musician\, Pete Webb of PC-Press and UWE. \n\nWe’re very excited to welcome funk and ska masters\, Traps\, back to play not he Curzon stage after filling the place for Dance Craze back in 2023! \nThe music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae\, crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, masterminded by a middle-class art student raised in the church. Jerry Dammers had a vision of an English Motown. Borrowing £700\, the label’s first record featured ‘Gangsters’ by The Specials\, backed by an instrumental track by the\, as yet\, unformed\, Selecter. Within two months the single was at number six in the national charts. Dammers signed Madness\, The Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers as a glut of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, soon infighting amongst the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to an inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Still under the auspices of Jerry Dammers\, 2 Tone entered a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979-1981 incarnation\, the label nevertheless continued to thrive for a further four years releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning end-piece finale in ‘(Free) Nelson Mandela’. Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment\, shaped British culture. \nWe will also be hosting a 2-Tone film screening plus live music. Check back here soon for more info and further updates!

Pauline had a difficult upbringing and joining the 2-Tone music movement in 1979 was the perfect catalyst; enabling her to explore and express all sides of herself. \nLooking back at her own ground-breaking experience in this feature documentary\, Pauline traces how her legacy came about and how it is relevant to the world today\, especially where society pushes the boundaries of gender\, politics\, race and identity. \nPauline\, of mixed Nigerian and Jewish heritage\, was adopted into a white family in Essex in the 50’s. Her upbringing was defined by casual racism from within her own family. Pauline went on to find her own identity in the Coventry 2-Tone music scene and The Selecter was a reflection of working-class life in Thatcher’s Britain\, their music as social reportage and with an ethos of anti-racism and anti-sexism. \nThis is a cinematic and visceral documentary mixing intimate actuality\, archive and interviews and a storming soundtrack. Contributors include Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson\, Don Letts\, Skin\, Damon Albarn\, Rhoda Dakar\, Lynval Golding\, Mykaell Riley\, Sonia Boyce and Jools Holland. \nRead More expand_more \nDirector\nJane Mingay\nCast\nPauline Black and the 2-Tone Family

SUMMARY:Jersey City - Word Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:WORD Presents Daniel Rachel\n09/11/2024 – 7:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE Event at WORD Jersey City!\nAbout the Book \n“Madness\, the Selecter\, the Beat\, UB40\, the Specials—these were just some of the biggest names in the 1970s and 1980s movement of punk-influenced ska and reggae-based songs\, antiracist and antisexist at heart\, on the airwaves. British music writer Rachel presents a rich and vibrant history of that era and of the bands and record companies that made it happen\, with a special focus on 2 Tone Records founder\, Jerry Dammers . . . It’s a big fat book about an important\, if sometimes neglected\, part of cultural music history . . . when music of the African diaspora was heard and embraced around the\nworld.” —Booklist\, STARRED review\n\n“We lived in Britain\, a country that had benefited from immigration\, but had an innate antipathy to ideas of multiculturalism. Daniel Rachel has managed to capture the essence of that contradiction in those Margaret Thatcher years\, with this comprehensive\, cautionary\, and celebratory saga of 2 Tone.”\n—Pauline Black\, the Selecter\n\nIN 1979\, 2 TONE RECORDS EXPLODED INTO THE CONSCIOUSNESS of music lovers in Britain\, the US\, and beyond\, as albums by the Specials\, the Selecter\, Madness\, the English Beat\, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a\nmultiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class\, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against rightwing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae\, crossed with a punk attitude\, to create an original hybrid.\n\nThe idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, England\, and masterminded by a middle-class art student\, Jerry Dammers\, who envisioned an English Motown. Dammers signed a slew of successful artists\, and a number of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Over the following years\, Dammers built the label back up again\, entering a new phase full of fresh signings and a beautiful end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.”\n\nTold in three parts\, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment shaped British\, American\, and world culture.\nAbout the author \nDANIEL RACHEL is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge; Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; and Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever. He is also coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography\, I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in the Beat. In 2021\, Rachel was a guest curator of the “2 Tone Lives & Legacies” exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021\, and he curated the anniversary edition of the Selecter’s debut album\, Too Much Pressure. These bands were decades ahead of their time\, in their integration of Black and white musicians and their musical synthesis of ska\, punk\, and other genres. The author interviewed ALL the musicians in these bands and presents the history in a fascinating way. \n\nDaniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge; Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever; and coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in The Beat. In 2021\, Rachel was a guest curator of the “2 Tone Lives & Legacies” exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021\, and he curated the anniversary edition of The Selecter’s debut album\, Too Much Pressure. “As a child\, 2 Tone defined the way I saw the world. I was seduced by the off-beat rhythms\, the cool-looking clothes\, and most importantly the social and political lyrics. 2 Tone taught me about Black and white unity\, it gave a voice to the pointlessness of street violence\, and it provided an understanding and awareness of the horror of rape and apartheid. That you could dance\, look good\, and be educated by a record was incredible. This music and these bands have printed an indelible mark on my life. To write the story of 2 Tone is one of profound personal pride. But more so\, to honor one of the greatest periods in modern popular culture. 2 Tone at its heart was a movement of great song.” \nTony Fletcher (moderator) is the author of a dozen books\, including several best-selling music biographies\, a memoir\, a novel and more. Born in the UK in 1964\, he started the fanzine Jamming! during the punk rock explosion of 1977\, which led him into further areas of the music and media worlds\, and eventually into writing books. Fletcher moved to New York City in the late 1980s\, and to the Hudson Valley in the mid-2000s. \n\nFacebookTwitterEmailShare

DESCRIPTION:TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 8\, 2024 – 4:00pm to 5:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\nBritish music writer Daniel Rachel\, author of Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys\, Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation will be in conversation with photojournalist Anastasia Pantsios on Sunday\, September 8th at 4 pm. \nlN 1979\, 2 TONE RECORDS EXPLODED INTO THE CONSCIOUSNESS of music lovers in Britain\, the US\, and beyond\, as albums by The Specials\, The Selecter\, Madness\, The English Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a mutiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class\, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. \nThe music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae crossed with a punk attitude created an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, England\, and masterminded by a middle-class art student\, Jerry Dammers\, who envisioned an English Motown. Borrowing £700\, the label’s first record featured “Gangsters” by The Specials\, backed by an instrumental track by the as-yet-unformed Selecter. Within two months\, the single reached number six on the UK music charts. Dammers went on to sign Madness\, The English Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers as a glut of successive hits propelled 2 Tone artists onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. \nAs excitement grew in the United States\, 2 Tone bands began crossing the Atlantic to perform for American audiences. Soon\, however\, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Still under the auspices of Jerry Dammers\, 2 Tone entered a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979–1981 incarnation\, the label nevertheless continued to thrive for another four years\, releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” Told in three parts\, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment shaped British\, American\, and world culture. \nDANIEL RACHEL is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge; Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever; and coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in The Beat.
