SUMMARY:FT Oxford Literary Festival with Pauline Black and Clare Short
DESCRIPTION:Walls Come Tumbling Down – The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone and Red Wedge\n\n\n\nSunday 26 March 2017  4:00pm 1 Hour \n\n\nSt John’s: Auditorium\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n£12.50 \nTicket price \n\n\n\nMusician-turned-author Daniel Rachel discusses his book about the coming together of pop music and politics in the 1970s and 1980s with the Labour politician Clare Short and singer/songwriter and lead singer of platinum-selling 2 tone band The Selecter Pauline Black.  The event will feature a unique soundtrack of the period\, compiled by Rachel\, and a presentation of more than a hundred images of related ephemera including archive film footage. \nWalls Come Tumbling Down charts a period between 1976 and 1992 that saw a youth generation challenge racism\, gender inequality and social and class divisions as never before. Rachel spoke to more than 100 campaigners\, musicians\, artists and politicians\, including Short\, to follow the rise and fall of three movements in particular – Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone and Red Wedge. \nRachel had a career as a singer/songwriter including as lead singer in Rachel’s Basement and with his solo albums\, A Simple Twist Of Folk and A Taste Of Money.  His first book\, Isle of Noises (A Guardian and NME book of the year)\, is a series of in-depth conversations about songwriting with some of the UK’s greatest living musicians of the past 50 years. Rachel has also written for the Kinks\, Ray Davies and Bryan Ferry and is a regular guest contributor on BBC Radio 5. \nShort was Labour MP for Birmingham Ladywood between 1983 and 2010. She served as Secretary of State for International Development for six years in the Blair government\, gaining a reputation as an effective minister in the UK and abroad. She resigned from the Government in protest at the Iraq War. Short grew up with Irish rebel songs\, married a drummer – and toured in the back of the van – and played a key role in Billy Bragg’s Jobs For Youth tour campaign. \nBlack has spent four decades in the music business and campaigns for racial equality through her work. She joined The Selecter as lead singer in 1979\, and the band went on to become one of the most influential in the 2 tone scene alongside Madness and The Specials. The band is on the road again this year with The Beat for a tour of the UK and Ireland. Black has also worked as an actress and as a presenter on radio and on Channel 4 and BBC Four.

SUMMARY:Trinity Academy\, Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Rachel – Conversations with Great British Songwriters\n\nDaniel Rachel is the author of ‘Isle of Noises’ (Guardian and NME Book of the Year (2013)). \nDaniel’s book documents his conversations with over twenty British songwriters from Ray Davies to Paul Weller\, from Jimmy Page to Robin Gibb\, from Sting to Chris Difford & Glenn Tillbrook from Squeeze\, Mick Jones of the Clash\, from the Pet Shop Boys to some of the boys from Madness\, from Joan Armatrading to Annie Lennox and Lily Allen\, each time trying to understand some secrets of their songwriting and how some of their famous songs were inspired and created. \nIn this event Daniel will be interviewed by author Mike Nicholson. \nDaniel will talk about his experience of tracking down and meeting with many famous songwriters and will uncover stories behind some very familiar music. In between the stories\, you’ll hear snippets of songs and Daniel playing his guitar\, giving examples of how well-known songs came to be. \nSo\, who kicked off the Smiths songs\, Morrissey or Marr?\nHow have single chords or even a seemingly random noise from a moving car inspired familiar songs?\nWhat happens when a record company tells a band their song needs a new chorus and the clock is ticking? \nAll these questions and lots more will be answered. \nQuotes from previous attendees of this event: \n“A must-attend evening for anyone who takes their music seriously” \n“Great chat\, great stories\, fascinating insight into the anguish of songwriters – made me feel like giving it a go myself!” \n“One of the best nights of my life last year!” \nThis is a fundraising event towards new sound and light equipment at Trinity Academy. \nThe event will take place in Trinity Academy school library with a bar and live music alongside. \nDoors open 730pm with a provisional event start time of 8.15pm \nBooks can be purchased and signed by the author after the event.

SUMMARY:Aye Write festival
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED\nDaniel Rachel & Dave Randal – Mixing Pop and Politics\n\n17th Mar 2017  •  6:00PM – 7:00PM  •  Mitchell Library \nThese books both explore how musicians have tried to change the world with the political power of music. \n\n\n \nMusicians have often wanted to change the world – many have believed in the political power of music. Years of touring with Faithless (and protesting) have given Dave Randall a unique insider’s view of the music industry. Sound System talks about music as a force for social change as well as something that has been used to keep people in their place throughout history. Daniel Rachel’s Walls Come Tumbling Down charts the pivotal period between 1976 and 1992 that saw politics and pop music come together. Musicians and their fans suddenly became instigators of social change\, and the political persuasion of musicians was as important as the songs they sang. He follows the rise and fall of three key movements of the time: Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge.

SUMMARY:Broadway Bookshop in conversation with KEN WORPOLE
DESCRIPTION:WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN: A TALK with DANIEL RACHEL in conversation with KEN WORPOLE\nWednesday\, 7 December 2016 at 07.00am \nWe are thrilled to announce that Daniel Rachel\, author of WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN (published by Picador) will be in conversation with writer and historian Ken Worpole at the shop on Wednesday 7 December 2016. Daniel’s remarkable oral history – with contributions from Billy Bragg\, Phill Jupitus\, Clare Short\, Tracy Thorn and many others – charts the years between 1976 and 1992 when ‘politics and pop music [came] together as never before to challenge racism\, gender inequality and social and class divisions.’ \nTickets £3 (includes glass of wine). For booking please RSVP: books@broadwaybookshophackney.com or call 020 7241 1626. For further information please see below. \nAbout the book: \nIn August 1976\, Eric Clapton made an inflammatory speech in support of Enoch Powell and ‘black’ repatriation\, sparking an anti-racism campaign that would soon radicalise an entire generation. The following sixteen years saw politics and pop music come together as never before to challenge racism\, gender inequality and social and class divisions. For the first time in UK history\, musicians became instigators of social change; and their political persuasion as important as the songs they sang. \nThrough the voices of campaigners\, musicians\, artists and politicians\, Daniel Rachel charts this extraordinary and pivotal period between 1976 and 1992\, following the rise and fall of three key movements of the time: Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge\, revealing how they both shaped\, and were shaped by\, the music of a generation. \nConsisting of new and exclusive in-depth conversations with over 100 contributors\, including Pauline Black\, Billy Bragg\, Jerry Dammers\, Phill Jupitus\, Neil Kinnock\, Linton Kwesi-Johnson\, Tom Robinson\, Clare Short\, Tracey Thorn and many more\, Walls Come Tumbling Down is a fascinating\, polyphonic and authoritative account of those crucial sixteen years in Britain’s history\, from the acclaimed writer of Isle of Noises. \nWalls Come Tumbling Down also features more than 150 images – many rare or previously unpublished – from some of the greatest names in photography\, including Adrian Boot\, Chalkie Davies\, Jill Furmanovsky\, Syd Shelton\, Pennie Smith\, Steve Rapport and Virginia Turbett. \n“We were trying to change the world in our tiny way by stopping the rise of fascism amongst youth with the power of music.” – Red Saunders\, founder of Rock Against Racism. \n‘An amazing oral history’ Billy Bragg \nAbout the author: \nDaniel Rachel wrote his first song when he was sixteen and was the lead-singer in Rachels Basement. He was first eligible to vote in the 1992 General Election and now lives in north London with his partner and three children. Daniel is the author of Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters – a Guardian and NME Book of the Year – also published by Picador\, and a regular guest contributor on BBC Radio 5. \nwww.danielrachel.com \nKen Worpole is a writer and social historian\, whose work includes many books on architecture\, landscape and public policy. He is married to photographer Larraine Worpole with whom he has collaborated on book projects internationally\, as well as in Hackney\, London\, where they have lived and worked since 1969. \nKen is Emeritus Professor\, Cities Institute London Metropolitan University\, and has served on the UK government’s Urban Green Spaces Task Force\, on the Expert Panel of the Heritage Lottery Fund\, and as an adviser to the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. \nwww.worpole.net

SUMMARY:BBC Radio 4 World Tonight
DESCRIPTION:BBC Radio 4 World Tonight\nIn conversation with Ritula Shah \n\n\n\n\n\nA self confessed “anorak” Ritula has been listening to Radio 4 ever since she can remember. She woke up with Jack de Manio and “listened with mother”. \n\n\n\n\n\nHaving ignored her father’s advice to become a lawyer\, she graduated in History from Warwick University in 1988. Soon afterwards\, she joined the Radio 4 production team based in Birmingham. \n After a spell in regional TV news\, she joined the Today programme. Seven years and many nightshifts later\, Ritula made the short journey across London to Bush House — where she became one of the presenters of the daily news show The World Today. She found herself presenting the programme from a variety of unlikely locations\, including a building site at the back of a mosque in Tehran and under a table on a rooftop in Moscow (the only place where the equipment was protected from the snow).\nRitula is now a presenter of The World Tonight and Saturday PM – and in 2011 won Media Professional of the Year at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards \n“Even my Mum’s impressed\,” she says\, “who could ask for more?” \nYou can follow Ritula on Twitter.
