SUMMARY:Louder Than Words with Horace Panter
DESCRIPTION:Daniel will be in-conversation with the Specials original member\, author and artist Horace Panter. \ns \nHorace Panter\nBorn in Croydon in 1953 Sir Horace Gentleman Panter met Jerry Dammers while doing an art degree at Coventry University. They\, together with Lynval Golding\, were the founding members of the iconic British ska band\, The Specials\, setting out to change the world by making people ‘dance as well as think’.  As bass player\, Horace continues to tour with The Specials\, including this year in the UK\, Europe\, Japan\, Australia and the USA. Although better known as ‘that guy in The Specials who plays bass’\, Horace is also a professional artist and since 2008\, has exhibited throughout the UK and in Singapore\, New York and Los Angeles. \nPop Culture informs both his audio and his visual aesthetic\, hence his giant ‘cassette’ paintings\, each meticulously researched to give and portray accurate information on its place in musical and cultural history. His ‘Americana’ series: paintings of street signs and diners\, relate back to his adolescent years when he was heavily influenced by American cultural exports in terms of art\, music and literature. What is left out of the painting is as considered as what is included\, making them highly stylized motifs of the American cityscape. \nHorace has also worked on a number of professional collaborations with brands\, including Fred Perry\, Dr Martens\, Club Wembley\, Sheaffer Inc.\, Teenage Cancer Trust\, Amy Winehouse Foundation\, Strummerville\, Blues Magazine UK\, MUSACK\, Stone Foundation and GPO Retro.

SUMMARY:ON BOWIE: DYLAN JONES & TERRY O’NEILL AT HATCHARDS
DESCRIPTION:ON BOWIE: DYLAN JONES & TERRY O’NEILL AT HATCHARDS\n\nDate: Tuesday 26 September 2017\nLocation: Hatchards Piccadilly \nLegendary photographer Terry O’Neill and British GQ editor Dylan Jones have both announced major new books on David Bowie for September. \nOn September 26th\, join us at 187 Piccadilly to hear the two men in conversation about the life and work of the stunning singer-songwriter\, artist\, performer\, creative-mind\, and (we’ll mention) voracious reader – who once held an account at Hatchards. \n O’Neill\, considered Bowie’s best visual documentarian\, has previously published a £1\,500 photography book on Bowie (including two original prints)\, exclusively sold at Hatchards. On Sep. 14th\, he releases a new book of photographs from Bowie’s ultimate performance as Ziggy Stardust\, ‘When Bowie Played the Marquee’ (£30)\, a watershed moment in music-history. \nDylan Jones has been a decades-long admirer of Bowie – an obsession which has amounted to his new biography\, ‘Bowie: A Life’ (£20). Released on Sep. 7th\, this thoroughly researched (following 180+ interviews) oral history inspects the star’s life through his early years to the height of his fame. Dealing with original familial\, social\, and creative moments that shaped Bowie\, Jones sheds a critical new light on the enigmatic character and his story. \nTime: 6:30-8:30pm\nPrice: £5 (including wine) redeemable against the price of either book. \nPlease contact events@hatchards.co.uk to reserve tickets\, or call us at 020 7439 9921. \nThis is a seated event and space is strictly limited: RSVP required.

DESCRIPTION:CAN MUSIC CHANGE THE WORLD?\n\n\n\nTHE BOOKS TENTTHE WORLD AS IT COULD BE\n\nDaniel Rachel charts the extraordinary and pivotal period between 1976-1992 when musicians and their fans truly became instigators of social change. \nFrom his conversations with the key members behind the Rock Against Racsim\, 2 Tone and Red Wedge movements – artists including Billy Bragg\, Pauline Black\, Jerry Dammers\, Tracey Thorn and Phil Jupitus – he brings to life the heady days of politics and pop music coming together for the first time in Britain’s musical history. \nDaniel is himself a musician and his latest book\, Walls Come Tumbling Down\, has just been named winner of the Penderyn Music Book Prize 2017.
