SUMMARY:ON BOWIE: DYLAN JONES & TERRY O’NEILL AT HATCHARDS
DESCRIPTION:ON BOWIE: DYLAN JONES & TERRY O’NEILL AT HATCHARDS\n\nDate: Tuesday 26 September 2017\nLocation: Hatchards Piccadilly \nLegendary photographer Terry O’Neill and British GQ editor Dylan Jones have both announced major new books on David Bowie for September. \nOn September 26th\, join us at 187 Piccadilly to hear the two men in conversation about the life and work of the stunning singer-songwriter\, artist\, performer\, creative-mind\, and (we’ll mention) voracious reader – who once held an account at Hatchards. \n O’Neill\, considered Bowie’s best visual documentarian\, has previously published a £1\,500 photography book on Bowie (including two original prints)\, exclusively sold at Hatchards. On Sep. 14th\, he releases a new book of photographs from Bowie’s ultimate performance as Ziggy Stardust\, ‘When Bowie Played the Marquee’ (£30)\, a watershed moment in music-history. \nDylan Jones has been a decades-long admirer of Bowie – an obsession which has amounted to his new biography\, ‘Bowie: A Life’ (£20). Released on Sep. 7th\, this thoroughly researched (following 180+ interviews) oral history inspects the star’s life through his early years to the height of his fame. Dealing with original familial\, social\, and creative moments that shaped Bowie\, Jones sheds a critical new light on the enigmatic character and his story. \nTime: 6:30-8:30pm\nPrice: £5 (including wine) redeemable against the price of either book. \nPlease contact events@hatchards.co.uk to reserve tickets\, or call us at 020 7439 9921. \nThis is a seated event and space is strictly limited: RSVP required.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Rachel – Conversations with Great British Songwriters\n\nDaniel Rachel is the author of ‘Isle of Noises’ (Guardian and NME Book of the Year (2013)). \nDaniel’s book documents his conversations with over twenty British songwriters from Ray Davies to Paul Weller\, from Jimmy Page to Robin Gibb\, from Sting to Chris Difford & Glenn Tillbrook from Squeeze\, Mick Jones of the Clash\, from the Pet Shop Boys to some of the boys from Madness\, from Joan Armatrading to Annie Lennox and Lily Allen\, each time trying to understand some secrets of their songwriting and how some of their famous songs were inspired and created. \nIn this event Daniel will be interviewed by author Mike Nicholson. \nDaniel will talk about his experience of tracking down and meeting with many famous songwriters and will uncover stories behind some very familiar music. In between the stories\, you’ll hear snippets of songs and Daniel playing his guitar\, giving examples of how well-known songs came to be. \nSo\, who kicked off the Smiths songs\, Morrissey or Marr?\nHow have single chords or even a seemingly random noise from a moving car inspired familiar songs?\nWhat happens when a record company tells a band their song needs a new chorus and the clock is ticking? \nAll these questions and lots more will be answered. \nQuotes from previous attendees of this event: \n“A must-attend evening for anyone who takes their music seriously” \n“Great chat\, great stories\, fascinating insight into the anguish of songwriters – made me feel like giving it a go myself!” \n“One of the best nights of my life last year!” \nThis is a fundraising event towards new sound and light equipment at Trinity Academy. \nThe event will take place in Trinity Academy school library with a bar and live music alongside. \nDoors open 730pm with a provisional event start time of 8.15pm \nBooks can be purchased and signed by the author after the event.

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED\nDaniel Rachel & Dave Randal – Mixing Pop and Politics\n\n17th Mar 2017  •  6:00PM – 7:00PM  •  Mitchell Library \nThese books both explore how musicians have tried to change the world with the political power of music. \n\n\n \nMusicians have often wanted to change the world – many have believed in the political power of music. Years of touring with Faithless (and protesting) have given Dave Randall a unique insider’s view of the music industry. Sound System talks about music as a force for social change as well as something that has been used to keep people in their place throughout history. Daniel Rachel’s Walls Come Tumbling Down charts the pivotal period between 1976 and 1992 that saw politics and pop music come together. Musicians and their fans suddenly became instigators of social change\, and the political persuasion of musicians was as important as the songs they sang. He follows the rise and fall of three key movements of the time: Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge.
