SUMMARY:Tring Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:TRING BOOK FESTIVAL\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDANIEL RACHEL – DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER: THE RISE & FALL OF COOL BRITANNIA\nThe nineties was the decade when British culture reclaimed its position at the artistic centre of the world. Not since the ‘Swinging Sixties’ had art\, comedy\, fashion\, film\, football\, literature and music interwoven into a blooming of national self-confidence. It was the decade of Lad Culture and Girl Power; of Blur vs Oasis. When fashion runways shone with British talent\, Young British Artists became household names\, football was ‘coming home’ and British film went worldwide. From Old Labour’s defeat in 1992 through to New Labour’s historic landslide in 1997\, Don’t Look Back In Anger chronicles the Cool Britannia age when the country united through a resurgence of patriotism and a celebration of all things British. \nBut it was also an era of false promises and misplaced trust\, when the weight of substance was based on the airlessness of branding\, spin and the first stirrings of celebrity culture. A decade that started with hope then ended with the death of the ‘people’s princess’ and 9/11 – an event that redefined a new world order.\nLength – 60 mins\nTickets – £12 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate\nSaturday 16th November 2019\n\n\nTime\n3:00 PM\n\n\nDoors Open\n2:30 PM\n\n\nVenue\nHigh Street Baptist Church\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStandard Seats\n£12.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t look back in Anger: The Rise & Fall of Cool Britannia (Hardback)\n\n\n\nTony Blair\, Noel Gallagher\, Damon Albarn\, Tracey Emin\, Irvine Welsh and an abundance of other contributors unite in this ambitious oral narrative charting the epic highs and crashing lows of the UK’s most creative and hedonistic period: the nineties. \n\n\n\n£20.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Add to BasketMembers earn 6 points per ticket\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThrough sixty-eight voices that epitomise the decade – including Tony Blair\, John Major\, Noel Gallagher\, Damon Albarn\, Tracey Emin\, Keith Allen\, Meera Syal\, David Baddiel\, Irvine Welsh and Steve Coogan – we re-live the epic highs and crashing lows of one of the most eventful periods in British history. SUMMARY:Fanzine Culture From The Mod Revival with Eddie Piller and Steve Rowland.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this fascinating in conversation with Eddie Piller and Steve Rowland\, focused on their recent publication Modzines – Fanzine Culture From The Mod Revival – an original book that documents the fast living world of fanzines. \nSunday 10 Nov  |  4.15pm \nPublished by Omnibus Press\, Modzines is illustrated in full colour with original artwork and photos\, and contains insights from leading figures in the scene including fanzine editors\, bands\, DJs\, promoters\, journalists and ‘faces’\, all of whom share previously unheard stories\, anecdotes and memories. \nModzines also contains original and rare artwork\, alongside covers and spreads from the most celebrated\, culture-defining fanzines including Direction Reaction Creation\, Extraordinary Sensations\, Roadrunner\, 48 Thrills\, Maximum Speed\, Sense of Style\, Sth Circular\, Patriotic\, Go Go\, In The Crowd\, Right Track and Beat That\, among others. \nAuthor\, Acid Jazz label owner and DJ Eddie Piller explains: “I was inspired to work in the music industry by the very first mod fanzine\, Maximum Speed. Within a year I had established my own modzine (Extraordinary Sensations) which\, by issue 12\, was selling approximately 15\,000 copies a time. The early ’80s mod world provided the perfect storm for fanzines: a completely uninterested mainstream media\, ease of production\, a proliferation of groups and an explosion of young kids all around the world meant that the concept of a home made magazine thrived. There were well over 1500 different modzine titles and this extraordinary underground culture has never been fully explored before” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:I will be DJ-ing a 2 Tone realted set in honour of Ranking Roger \n  \nOne of the best book bashes in the UK – The Quietus \nA literary festival that’s thrown its pretensions in a skip – Londonist\n\nThe coolest literary festival of the summer – Authonomy \nSince 2010\, we’ve been celebrating the area’s radical and literary history with a festival that’s become one of the most eclectic\, diverse and\, frankly\, FUN in the literary calendar. \nStoke Newington has been one of the most fascinating London ‘villages’ throughout history. From the non-conformists who gathered around Newington Green in the 17th century to the diverse community that exists today\, it’s long been a melting pot of new ideas\, artistic endeavour and off-centre thinking and our programming is directly inspired by the mavericks and rabble-rousers who were born\, lived or worked here – Mary Wollstonecraft\, Reverend Richard Price\, Edgar Allan Poe\, Daniel Defoe\, John Berger\, Marc Bolan\, Sid Vicious & many more – who helped shape the world we know. \nWe’re a non-profit organisation and\, as we grow\, we’re generating and supporting a range of adult and child literacy projects in Hackney.

SUMMARY:ROCK AND ROLL BOOK CLUB: RIPPED AND TORN / WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN
DESCRIPTION:ROCK AND ROLL BOOK CLUB: RIPPED AND TORN/WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN\nTony Drayton- Ripped And Torn by Tony Drayton. Walls Come Tumbling Down by Daniel Rachelin conversation with Tony Gleed and Julie Hamill with Radio Generation LIVE!\n\nLONDON: Dublin Castle\nWED 6TH FEB\, 2019 7:15pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTony Drayton – Ripped and Torn: 1976 – 79 The Loudest Punk Fanzine in the UK- Tony will be in conversation with Tony Gleed this evening\, exploring the world of Ripped And Torn\, and signing copies of the book for you to buy. \nOne of the first punk fanzines\, and longer lived than contemporary organs like Sniffing Glue\, Ripped and Torn began in Glasgow in November 1976 and carried on into the next wave of punk. It ran for eighteen issues\, all of which are faithfully reproduced in this book. By punks and for punks\, Ripped and Torn is a fascinating document of the punk subculture and a sacred text of DIY culture. \nDaniel Rachel- Walls Come Tumbling Down charts the pivotal period between 1976 and 1992 that saw politics and pop music come together for the first time in Britain’s musical history; when ‘the political persuasion of musicians was as important as the songs they sang’. \nThrough the voices of campaigners\, musicians\, artists and politicians\, Daniel Rachel follows the rise and fall of three key movements of the time: Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge\, revealing how they all shaped\, and were shaped by\, the music of a generation. Composed of interviews with over a hundred and fifty of the key players at the time\, Walls Come Tumbling Down is a fascinating\, polyphonic and authoritative account of those crucial sixteen years in Britain’s history. ‘Charts punk\, 2 Tone and then Red Wedge’s subsequent battle for a multicultural Britain in a brilliant account of the period’ – Q Magazine. Daniel is in conversation tonight with Julie Hamill\, with signed books available to buy. \nRadio Generation- Excellent punk\, new wave\, post punk and proto punk concept act\, handpicked to compliment tonight’s books and entertain you beyond a bookish bedtime! Rad Gen don’t so much cover classic 70s/80s bangers as deconstruct them\, re-imagine them and generally turn the upside down and inside out. Marvelous entertainment assured…check the setlist…BUZZCOCKS\, RAMONES\, GEN X\, THE DAMNED\, MAGAZINE\, RUTS\, DEAD BOYS\, XTC\, NUMAN\, KRAFTWERK\, BOWIE\, IGGY\, LOU….

SUMMARY:Louder Than Words with Horace Panter
DESCRIPTION:Daniel will be in-conversation with the Specials original member\, author and artist Horace Panter. \ns \nHorace Panter\nBorn in Croydon in 1953 Sir Horace Gentleman Panter met Jerry Dammers while doing an art degree at Coventry University. They\, together with Lynval Golding\, were the founding members of the iconic British ska band\, The Specials\, setting out to change the world by making people ‘dance as well as think’.  As bass player\, Horace continues to tour with The Specials\, including this year in the UK\, Europe\, Japan\, Australia and the USA. Although better known as ‘that guy in The Specials who plays bass’\, Horace is also a professional artist and since 2008\, has exhibited throughout the UK and in Singapore\, New York and Los Angeles. \nPop Culture informs both his audio and his visual aesthetic\, hence his giant ‘cassette’ paintings\, each meticulously researched to give and portray accurate information on its place in musical and cultural history. His ‘Americana’ series: paintings of street signs and diners\, relate back to his adolescent years when he was heavily influenced by American cultural exports in terms of art\, music and literature. What is left out of the painting is as considered as what is included\, making them highly stylized motifs of the American cityscape. \nHorace has also worked on a number of professional collaborations with brands\, including Fred Perry\, Dr Martens\, Club Wembley\, Sheaffer Inc.\, Teenage Cancer Trust\, Amy Winehouse Foundation\, Strummerville\, Blues Magazine UK\, MUSACK\, Stone Foundation and GPO Retro.

SUMMARY:Wilderness festival
DESCRIPTION:CAN MUSIC CHANGE THE WORLD?\n\n\n\nTHE BOOKS TENTTHE WORLD AS IT COULD BE\n\nDaniel Rachel charts the extraordinary and pivotal period between 1976-1992 when musicians and their fans truly became instigators of social change. \nFrom his conversations with the key members behind the Rock Against Racsim\, 2 Tone and Red Wedge movements – artists including Billy Bragg\, Pauline Black\, Jerry Dammers\, Tracey Thorn and Phil Jupitus – he brings to life the heady days of politics and pop music coming together for the first time in Britain’s musical history. \nDaniel is himself a musician and his latest book\, Walls Come Tumbling Down\, has just been named winner of the Penderyn Music Book Prize 2017.
