Titled Too Much Too Young The 2 Tone Records Story : Rude Boys\, Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation\, the book maps out the journey of one of the UK’s most influential record labels that became a movement that shook up the nation with its rebellious spirit\, fighting against the injustices in society and took the fight against the right wing extremism in the country. \nIn 1979\, 2 Tone exploded into the national consciousness as records by The Specials\, The Selecter\, Madness\, The Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was black and white: a multi-racial force of British and Caribbean island musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class and gender struggles. \nThe music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae; and crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, masterminded by a middle-class art student raised in the church. Jerry Dammers had a vision of an English Motown. Borrowing £700\, the label’s first record featured ‘Gangsters’ by The Specials’ backed by an instrumental track by the\, as yet\, unformed\, Selecter. Within two months the single was at number six in the national charts. Dammers signed Madness\, The Beat and The Bodysnatchers as a glut of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, soon infighting amongst the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to an inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. \nStill under the auspices of Jerry Dammers\, 2 Tone entered in a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979-1981 incarnation the label nevertheless continued to thrive for a further four years releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning end-piece finale in ‘(Free) Nelson Mandela’. \nTold in three parts\, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment\, shaped British culture. \nAuthor\, Daniel Rachel\, said: As a child\, 2 Tone defined the way I saw the world. I was seduced by the off-beat rhythms\, the cool looking clothes and most importantly the social and political lyrics. 2 Tone taught me about black and white unity\, it gave a voice to the pointlessness of street violence\, and it provided an understanding and awareness of the horror of rape and apartheid. That you could dance\, look good and be educated by a record was incredible. This music and these bands have printed an indelible mark on my life. To write the story of 2 Tone is one of profound personal pride. But more so\, to honour one of the greatest periods in modern popular culture. 2 Tone at its heart was a movement of great songwriters\, musicians and songs – We danced and sang\, and the music played in a de boomtown! \nPublisher\, Lee Brackstone said: The music and the aesthetic of 2 Tone set the dial for the prevailing mood of the counterculture in the 1980s\, and we’re still feeling the aftershocks of the extraordinary achievements of the label four decades later. Through exhaustive interviews with the major artists and those associated with the label and deep research\, award-winning writer Daniel Rachel brings the story of 2 Tone to life: the joy of a uniquely creative moment which arguably did more than any other to challenge racism and class prejudice in Britain\, and in the process enlightened a whole generation of fans and created a catalogue of unparalleled quality. Essential reading. \nBirmingham-born Daniel Rachel is a former musician-turned-award-winning and bestselling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters (a Guardian and NME Book of the Year)\, Walls Come Tumbling Down: the music & politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone and Red Wedge (winner of the Penderyn Music Book prize)\, Don’t Look Back in Anger: the Rise & Fall of Cool Britannia (An Evening Standard and Metro Book of the Year)\, The Lost Album of The Beatles: What if the Beatles hadn’t Split Up? (Guardian Book of the Day and Amazon No. 1 Bestseller)\, One For The Road (The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene) Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever (with Jill Furmanovsky – A Sunday Times Bestseller)\, When Ziggy Played the Marquee by Terry O’Neill (editor) and co-writer of Ranking Roger’s autobiography I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in The Beat (a Vive Le Rock Book of the Year). In 2021\, Daniel was a guest curator of 2 Tone Lives & Legacies exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021 and curated the anniversary edition of the Selecter’s debut album Too Much Pressure.

To learn more visit: http://www.makeoutroom.com/ \nCity Lights celebrates the publication of \nToo Much Too Young\, the 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys\, Racism\, and the Soundtrack of a Generation\nBy Daniel Rachel\nPublished by Akashic Books \nThe definitive and remarkable story of 2 Tone Records\, featuring an introduction by Pauline Black \nIn 1979\, 2 Tone Records exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain\, the US\, and beyond\, as albums by The Specials\, The Selecter\, Madness\, The English Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class\, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. \nThe music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae crossed with a punk attitude created an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, England\, and masterminded by a middle-class art student\, Jerry Dammers\, who envisioned an English Motown. Borrowing £700\, the label’s first record featured “Gangsters” by The Specials\, backed by an instrumental track by the as-yet-unformed Selecter. Within two months\, the single reached number six on the UK music charts. Dammers went on to sign Madness\, The English Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers as a glut of successive hits propelled 2 Tone artists onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. \nAs excitement grew in the United States\, 2 Tone bands began crossing the Atlantic to perform for American audiences. Soon\, however\, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. \nStill\, under the auspices of Jerry Dammers\, 2 Tone entered a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979–1981 incarnation\, the label nevertheless continued to thrive for another four years\, releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” \nTold in three parts\, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment shaped British\, American\, and world culture. \nDaniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge;Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever; and coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in The Beat. DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT\nDaniel Rachel: Too Much Too Young\n7PM WEDNESDAY\, AUGUST 28\n\n\nLOCATION: TEMPE\nBirmingham-born music historian and bestselling author Daniel Rachel visits with his book\, Too Much Too Young\, The 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys\, Racism\, and the Soundtrack of a Generation. \nABOUT THE BOOKIn 1979\, 2 Tone Records exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain\, the US\, and beyond\, as albums by the Specials\, the Selecter\, Madness\, the English Beat\, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class\, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against rightwing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae\, crossed with a punk attitude\, to create an original hybrid. \nThe idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, England\, and masterminded by a middle-class art student\, Jerry Dammers\, who envisioned an English Motown. Dammers signed a slew of successful artists\, and a number of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Over the following years\, Dammers built the label back up again\, entering a new phase full of fresh signings and a beautiful end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.”Told in three parts\, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment shaped British\, American\, and world culture. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDaniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge; Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; and Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever. He is also coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography\, I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in the Beat. In 2021\, Rachel was a guest curator of the “2 Tone Lives & Legacies” exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021\, and he curated the anniversary edition of the Selecter’s debut album\, Too Much Pressure.\nABOUT THE MODERATOR \nMarc Masters writes about music for Pitchfork\, the Wire\, and Bandcamp Daily. DESCRIPTION:TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 8\, 2024 – 4:00pm to 5:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\nBritish music writer Daniel Rachel\, author of Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys\, Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation will be in conversation with photojournalist Anastasia Pantsios on Sunday\, September 8th at 4 pm. \nlN 1979\, 2 TONE RECORDS EXPLODED INTO THE CONSCIOUSNESS of music lovers in Britain\, the US\, and beyond\, as albums by The Specials\, The Selecter\, Madness\, The English Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white: a mutiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class\, and gender struggles. Still under the auspices of Jerry Dammers\, 2 Tone entered a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979–1981 incarnation\, the label nevertheless continued to thrive for another four years\, releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” Told in three parts\, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment shaped British\, American\, and world culture. \nDANIEL RACHEL is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge; Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever; and coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in The Beat. SUMMARY:Saugerties\, New York
DESCRIPTION:The 2 Tone Records Story featuring author Daniel Rachel and Dance Craze\n\nTrailer Review Orpheum Tickets \nORPHEUM · SAUGERTIES\nA Foreword! event. \nMonday\, September 9 7:00p \nDaniel will be in conversation with Tony Fletcher about his new book “Too Much Too Young”: The 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys\, Racism\, and the Soundtrack of a Generation”  with a preface by Pauline Black\, singer of the legendary band the Selecter.  This is the story of truly iconic bands like the Specials\, Madness\, the English Beat\, the Selecter\, Bad Manners\, and others in the UK “ska revival” of the early 1980s. These bands were decades ahead of their time\, in their integration of Black and white musicians and their musical synthesis of ska\, punk\, and other genres. The author interviewed ALL the musicians in these bands and presents the history in a fascinating way. \n\nDaniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters; Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\, 2 Tone\, and Red Wedge; Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia; The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?; One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene; Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever; and coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in The Beat. In 2021\, Rachel was a guest curator of the “2 Tone Lives & Legacies” exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021\, and he curated the anniversary edition of The Selecter’s debut album\, Too Much Pressure. “As a child\, 2 Tone defined the way I saw the world. I was seduced by the off-beat rhythms\, the cool-looking clothes\, and most importantly the social and political lyrics. 2 Tone taught me about Black and white unity\, it gave a voice to the pointlessness of street violence\, and it provided an understanding and awareness of the horror of rape and apartheid. That you could dance\, look good\, and be educated by a record was incredible. This music and these bands have printed an indelible mark on my life. To write the story of 2 Tone is one of profound personal pride. But more so\, to honor one of the greatest periods in modern popular culture. 2 Tone at its heart was a movement of great song.” \nTony Fletcher (moderator) is the author of a dozen books\, including several best-selling music biographies\, a memoir\, a novel and more. Born in the UK in 1964\, he started the fanzine Jamming! during the punk rock explosion of 1977\, which led him into further areas of the music and media worlds\, and eventually into writing books. Fletcher moved to New York City in the late 1980s\, and to the Hudson Valley in the mid-2000s. \n\nFacebookTwitterEmailShare

DESCRIPTION:WORD Presents Daniel Rachel\n09/11/2024 – 7:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE Event at WORD Jersey City!\nAbout the Book \n“Madness\, the Selecter\, the Beat\, UB40\, the Specials—these were just some of the biggest names in the 1970s and 1980s movement of punk-influenced ska and reggae-based songs\, antiracist and antisexist at heart\, on the airwaves. British music writer Rachel presents a rich and vibrant history of that era and of the bands and record companies that made it happen\, with a special focus on 2 Tone Records founder\, Jerry Dammers . . . It’s a big fat book about an important\, if sometimes neglected\, part of cultural music history . . . when music of the African diaspora was heard and embraced around the\nworld.” —Booklist\, STARRED review\n\n“We lived in Britain\, a country that had benefited from immigration\, but had an innate antipathy to ideas of multiculturalism. Pauline had a difficult upbringing and joining the 2-Tone music movement in 1979 was the perfect catalyst; enabling her to explore and express all sides of herself. \nLooking back at her own ground-breaking experience in this feature documentary\, Pauline traces how her legacy came about and how it is relevant to the world today\, especially where society pushes the boundaries of gender\, politics\, race and identity. \nPauline\, of mixed Nigerian and Jewish heritage\, was adopted into a white family in Essex in the 50’s. Her upbringing was defined by casual racism from within her own family. Pauline went on to find her own identity in the Coventry 2-Tone music scene and The Selecter was a reflection of working-class life in Thatcher’s Britain\, their music as social reportage and with an ethos of anti-racism and anti-sexism. \nThis is a cinematic and visceral documentary mixing intimate actuality\, archive and interviews and a storming soundtrack. Contributors include Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson\, Don Letts\, Skin\, Damon Albarn\, Rhoda Dakar\, Lynval Golding\, Mykaell Riley\, Sonia Boyce and Jools Holland. \nRead More expand_more \nDirector\nJane Mingay\nCast\nPauline Black and the 2-Tone Family

DESCRIPTION:Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story: Rude Boys\, Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation\n\nSat 2 Nov 2024 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM\nMorocco Bound\, SE1 3HB \n\n\n\n\n\nA TIMES / SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR \nIn conversation with award winning and best-selling author Daniel Rachel \nIn 1979\, 2 Tone exploded into the national consciousness as records by The Specials\, The Selecter\, Madness\, The Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was black and white: a multi-racial force of British and Caribbean island musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and took fight against right wing extremism. The music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae; and crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. \nToo Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment\, shaped British culture. \nA TIMES/SUNDAY TIMES / UNCUT / RESIDENT / LOUDER THAN WAR / BLITZED BOOK OF THE YEAR.
