SUMMARY:Paul Weller evening
DESCRIPTION:The Long Play Sessions: Dan Jennings with ‘Paul Weller Dancing Through the Fire’\n Wed 13 May 2026 7:00 PM – 10:30 PM ICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSelect tickets\n\n\nJoin us for an intimate and expansive evening with award‑winning broadcaster and journalist Dan Jennings\, as he discusses DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE: The Authorised Oral History of Paul Weller\, the first fully authorised and definitive oral account of one of Britain’s most influential and enduring musical figures. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, ICMP’s curated series celebrating transformative writers\, artists and cultural voices who shape how we understand music\, identity and creative expression. Each session opens a window into the stories behind the art — blending conversation\, cultural history and lived experience. \nIn Dancing Through the Fire\, Jennings traces the extraordinary creative life of Paul Weller\, from the explosive urgency of The Jam\, through the ambitious sophistication of The Style Council\, to a prolific and uncompromising solo career spanning more than three decades. Built from over 200 hours of interviews with more than 250 contributors\, including Weller himself; the book offers an unprecedented\, collective portrait of a musician whose influence has defined generations. \nDrawing on unique access to Weller’s inner circle of family\, friends\, bandmates\, producers and collaborators\, Jennings reveals the drive\, discipline and restless creativity behind a career that continually resisted nostalgia and commercial complacency. The result is candid\, generous and richly revealing — capturing not just the myth\, but the man at the centre of one of British music’s most remarkable artistic journeys. \nFar more than a standard biography\, Dan’s book explores the realities of longevity\, reinvention and creative survival. It reflects on class\, culture\, fandom and the personal cost of sustaining artistic integrity in the public eye\, while charting how Weller became one of the very few artists to achieve Number One albums across five consecutive decades. \nPaul Weller’s story — creative\, uncompromising and continually evolving\, speaks to anyone who cares about music as a cultural force. It asks what it takes to remain vital\, curious and true to yourself when the world expects you to stand still. \nAlready hailed by critics as a landmark work of music journalism\, Dancing Through the Fire is being recognised as the definitive account of one of Britain’s greatest artists. \nWhat to Expect\n\nA talk from Dan Jennings exploring the making of Dancing Through the Fire\, the interview process\, and the challenge of capturing a living legend through many voices\nIn‑depth discussion of creativity\, longevity\, reinvention and artistic integrity across five decades of British music\nBehind‑the‑scenes insight into Jennings’ unprecedented access to Paul Weller and his closest collaborators\nReflections on class\, fandom\, cultural legacy and why Weller’s music continues to resonate across generations\nAudience Q&A\, offering the chance to engage directly with Jennings about his research\, the writing process and Paul Weller’s cultural impact\nBook signing — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a thoughtful\, energising and unforgettable evening celebrating one of modern music’s most vital and uncompromising creative figures. \n\n\nLocation\nICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA

SUMMARY:Turku University\, Finland
DESCRIPTION:The fascination and affective legacy of fascism: final seminar\nDaniel will give a keynote speech on his new book\, This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll.\n\n\nThursday 27 November 2025\, 2–6 pm\, Tauno Nurmela Hall (I\, Main Building of the University of Turku) \nThe seminar is organized by the research project Fascism’s Lume and Affective Heritage in Finnish Culture (Koneen Foundation\, 2021–2025) at the University of Turku in collaboration with the International Institute for Popular Culture (IIPC) and the Centre for the Study of Storytelling\, Experientiality and Memory (SELMA) research centers. \nThe purpose of this multidisciplinary project\, combining science and art\, has been to focus on the cultural legacy of Finnish fascism after World War II\, and especially its affectivity. The recycling of fascist material has created an emotional climate in which different manifestations of patriotism\, fascism\, and the idea of nationalism are mixed together. \nThe seminar will feature speeches from the project’s researchers\, a performance by a theatre group working as part of the project\, and a speech from an English non-fiction writer examining Nazism and popular music. \nThe event will be held in Finnish\, except for Daniel Rachel’s presentation in English. \nAdmission to the event is free. \nProgram \n2 p.m. Opening remarks \nFascism and Esotericism\nDocent Kimi Kärki \nComposer Yrjö Kilpinen – from political activist to “harmless” artist\nMSc Susanna Waldén-Antikainen \nThe fascination of fascism in Finnish black metal\nFT Aila Mustamo \nVoices of confrontation in the documentary Boiling Point: Whose Finlandia is it?\nDocent Anna-Elena Pääkkölä \nAt 4 pm They said: borders closed \nPerformance of the theatre piece and panel discussion (the project’s researchers and theatre group provide background on their work and discuss with the audience) \nTheatre group:\nDirected by Fiikka Forsman. From Keith Moon and Vivian Stanshall kitting themselves out in Nazi uniforms and terrorising Jewish neighbourhoods to Siouxsie Sioux and Sid Vicious brandishing swastikas in the pomp of punk\, generations of performers have associated themselves in troubling ways with the aesthetics\, mass hysteria and even ideology of Nazism. Whether shock factor\, stupidity\, or crass attempt at subversion\, rock ‘n’ roll has indulged these associations – whimsically\, carelessly\, occasionally malevolently – in a way not accepted by any other artform. But how accountable should fans\, the media\, and the music industry be for what has often seemed a sleazy fascination with the eroticised perversions of a fascist regime? \nBio: Daniel Rachel is a former musician turned award-winning and bestselling author. In his latest book\, This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll\, award-winning music historian Daniel Rachel navigates these turbulent waters with extraordinary delicacy and care\, asking us to look anew at the artists that have defined us\, inspired us and given us joy – and consider why so many have been drawn to the imagery of a movement responsible for the twentieth century’s worst atrocities. Alongside a sensitive history of the Holocaust and an examination of the place it holds in our cultural consciousness\, Rachel asks essential questions of actions often overlooked or underplayed\, whilst neither casting sweeping judgement nor offering easy answers. In doing so\, he asks us to reassess the history of rock ’n’ roll and sheds new light on the grim echoes of the Third Reich in popular culture and the legacy of twentieth (and twenty-first)-century history as it defines us today. Rachel’s previous books include Too Much Too Young: Rude Boys\, Racism and the Soundtrack of a Generation (a Sunday Times\, Uncut\, Rough Trade US and Resident Music book of the year) and Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters (a Guardian and NME book of the year). SUMMARY:'American Pop' Film screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:GARDEN CINEMA EVENT\nJargon presents: American Pop + Q&A 15\nRalph Bakshi\, USA\, 1981\, 95m.\n\n\nDue to unexpected circumstances\, Paul Gorman is no longer able to take part in this screening. We are instead very glad to be joined for a Q&A with the award-winning music writer Daniel Rachel\, author of the forthcoming book This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll: Pop Music\, the Swastika and the Third Reich. \nLong neglected\, American Pop is perhaps the last great film of the golden age of adult animation. At once a jukebox musical\, an intergenerational epic\, and a stylistic tour de force\, the film tells the intertwined story of music and migration through the adventures of one remarkable family. Fleeing the Russian pogroms\, a rabbi’s wife and her baby son land in New York at the height of the vaudeville craze. Each generation that follows falls in with another wave of distinctly American music\, from jazz and soul to rock’n’roll\, psychedelia\, punk\, and beyond. Directed by Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat) in his distinctive Rotoscoping style\, the film is both a reimagining of the director’s own journey from Mandatory Palestine to Brooklyn and a celebration of the allure of mass culture. \nScenes of animated violence and drug use \nThis screening is part of ‘Beyond Jewish Cinema’\, a new series that considers what it really means to make ‘Jewish cinema’ in light of parallel currents in commercial and experimental filmmaking. Moving from the Lower East Side to the Yiddish East End and beyond\, the series shines a new light on old favourites alongside lesser-known works from across the history of film. ‘Beyond Jewish Cinema’ is programmed by Jargon\, a non-profit dedicated to exploring past\, present\, and future visions of Jewish diasporic culture. \n\nBook Tickets\n\n\n\nWed 25 Jun\n20:30 \n\n\n\n\n\n \nPlease arrive promptly – we do not show adverts.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n39-41 Parker Street London WC2B 5PQ

SUMMARY:Bob Dylan Centre
DESCRIPTION:Bob Dylan Center Book Club: “Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMay 22\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins on Thursday\, May 22\, for a virtual Book Club event with Daniel Rachel\, author of a new book exploring the definitive and remarkable story of 2 Tone Records. \nIn 1979\, 2 Tone Records exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain\, the United States and beyond as albums by the Specials\, the Selecter\, Madness\, the English Beat and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was Black and white\, a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues\, racism\, class and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic\, white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. \nThe idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, England\, masterminded by middle-class art student Jerry Dammers\, who envisioned an English Motown. Dammers signed a slew of successful artists\, and a number of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto “Top of the Pops” and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, infighting among the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to the inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Over the following years\, Dammers built the label back up again\, entering a new phase full of fresh signings and a beautiful end-piece finale in the activist hit song “(Free) Nelson Mandela.” \n“Too Much Too Young” is the definitive story of a label that\, for a brief\, bright\, burning moment\, shaped British\, American and world culture. \n\nDaniel Rachel is a Birmingham-born\, best-selling author whose previous works include: “Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters;” “Walls Come Tumbling Down: The Music and Politics of Rock Against Racism\,” “2 Tone\,” and “Red Wedge;” “Don’t Look Back in Anger: The Rise and Fall of Cool Britannia;” “The Lost Album of the Beatles: What If the Beatles Hadn’t Split Up?;” “One for the Road: The Life & Lyrics of Simon Fowler & Ocean Colour Scene;” and “Oasis: Knebworth: Two Nights That Will Live Forever.” He is also coauthor of Ranking Roger’s autobiography\, “I Just Can’t Stop It: My Life in the Beat.” In 2021\, Rachel was a guest curator of the “2 Tone Lives & Legacies” exhibition as part of Coventry Cultural City 2021\, and he curated the anniversary edition of the Selecter’s debut album\, “Too Much Pressure.” \nDetails:\nThis event will take place virtually via Zoom. \nThursday\, May 22\, 2025 \n6 p.m. \nTickets:\n$5 for nonmembers \nFree for Bob Dylan Center members

\n\nCategorie: Antirazzismo\, Musica e Controcultura\n€34.00 \n\n \n  \n\nScheda Bibliografica\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAutore\nDaniel Rachel\n\n\nPagine\n480\n\n\nFormato\ncm 15 x 22 – brossurato con bandelle\n\n\nHellnation Libri\nUnaltramusica\n\n\nISBN\n9788867184064

SUMMARY:Curzon Cleevedon 2 Tone Britain
DESCRIPTION:Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story + LIVE BAND + DOCUMENATRY + IN-CONVERSATION\n\n \n\nBook Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of 2-Tone deep diving as Daniel Rachel\, author of Too Much\, Too Young: The 2 Tone Story\, discusses his book and the wider questions of music\, culture\, and anti-racism in conversation with Bristol Poet and educator at Cargo\, Lawrence Hoo\, and Publisher\, Sociologist\, and Musician\, Pete Webb of PC-Press and UWE. \n\nWe’re very excited to welcome funk and ska masters\, Traps\, back to play not he Curzon stage after filling the place for Dance Craze back in 2023! \nThe music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae\, crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry\, masterminded by a middle-class art student raised in the church. Jerry Dammers had a vision of an English Motown. Borrowing £700\, the label’s first record featured ‘Gangsters’ by The Specials\, backed by an instrumental track by the\, as yet\, unformed\, Selecter. Within two months the single was at number six in the national charts. Dammers signed Madness\, The Beat\, and The Bodysnatchers as a glut of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However\, soon infighting amongst the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to an inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination. Still under the auspices of Jerry Dammers\, 2 Tone entered a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979-1981 incarnation\, the label nevertheless continued to thrive for a further four years releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning end-piece finale in ‘(Free) Nelson Mandela’. Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief\, bright burning moment\, shaped British culture. \nWe will also be hosting a 2-Tone film screening plus live music. Check back here soon for more info and further updates!
